Shoot-off agony for Phil
October 10, 2008
By Peter Jones (Archery GB)

British archers Lucy O'Sullivan and Phillip Gower have both agonisingly missed out reaching the semi-finals, at the World Youth Championships in Antalya.

Phillip, in his first international championship, was up against Joey Hunt of the United States in the quarter-finals of the Compound Cadet Men tournament, and both youngsters shot superbly to tie the match 115-115.

There then followed a veritable 'war of attrition' as they chased victory via a shoot-off. Each archer shot a 10 with his first, second and third arrow...but on the third one, the American was adjudged to be one centimetre nearer, and so took the tie. Hunt then went on to secure a place in Sunday's final.

"It was sheer agony for Phil, and we all feel for him," said team manager Hilda Gibson. "He shot superbly, and to go out as he did was heart-breaking."

Jake, Phil and Lewis win the World Youth team bronze medal

October 11, 2008

By Peter Jones (Archery GB)

Team GB's compound cadet men's team have taken the bronze medal at the World Youth Championships in Antalya, Turkey.

The trio of Phil Gower, Jake Bunce and Lewis Humphries defeated Canada in the bronze medal match by 226 points to 221. USA, who defeated the GB trio in the semi-finals, took the gold medal when they beat Mexico in the final.

"It's a fantastic achievement, the three boys were superb," said proud team manager Hilda Gibson. "It's a wonderful way to end the championships, and a terrific achievement."
